Are you already thinking
what I was thinking? Right from the start I was convinced that it was
going to be a Southern Bridget Jones... and I do love Bridget Jones.
"Fitzherbert. Because... that is his name." I definitely need to watch
that movie this week.
It did strangely resemble Bridget Jones in some ways, but mostly it
was a completely different book. I was fooled
(by myself). Diary of a
Mad Fat Girl is about a teacher, Ace, in Mississippi who is slightly
mad, slightly fat and definitely a girl. It's probably not a good thing
that I was comparing the two the entire
time either. Bridget is a much more likable character than Ace, in my humble opinion, but they
both have a dirty mouth, trouble with men and weight issues...and that's about all they have in common.
It goes in a lot
of different directions: romance, true crime, domestic abuse, and pizza
to name a few.
Ace loves pizza and beer. Sometimes, ok
most of
the time, the directions it takes make you scratch your head, but I made
my way through the book quite quickly and it's definitely another good
summer read. The author has a very distinct and funny voice and although I did have some questions
that weren't answered and some parts seemed a bit extreme I enjoyed it.
Not my favorite book ever and it can't be compared to any Jane Austen
novel, but it was OK. I emailed my
Aunt Gwenda
that it deserved a B and I'll stick to that.
I don't
think you're an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the
ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really
are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let
whatever's in your head come out of your mouth without much
consideration of the consequences... But the thing is, um, what I'm
trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps
despite appearances, I like you, very much. Just as you are.
I
am so, beyond sidetracked right now.
Anyway, if you're looking for a light, fun, chick-lit read you might need to add this to your list of books to read!
